Understanding the EU Batteries Regulation (Effective 18 February 2027)
The EU Batteries Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542) marks a major shift toward a more circular economy in consumer electronics. From 18 February 2027, all portable batteries (sealed batteries up to 5 kg) integrated into devices sold in the EU must be readily removable and replaceable by the end user, using commonly available tools or often tool-free methods.
Core requirements include:
- Easy access to the battery without permanently damaging the product.
- Replacement possible with minimal tools (screwdrivers, coins, or no tools at all in many cases).
- Clear user instructions, safety warnings, and disassembly guidance must be provided.
- The design must enable consumers to replace the battery themselves at any time during the product’s life.
The regulation aims to combat e-waste, extend product lifespan, support the “right to repair,” and facilitate better battery recycling. By moving away from glued or soldered batteries, it prevents thousands of still-functional headphones and earbuds from ending up in landfills simply because their battery has degraded after 1–2 years of use.

- Each earbud uses a high-efficiency, long-life battery optimized for its small size; due to extreme space constraints and the need to maintain premium fit, waterproofing (IPX5/IPX7), and drop resistance, the earbud batteries are designed for professional replacement when needed, while the overall system significantly extends product lifespan through the replaceable case battery.
- Magnetic alignment and intelligent firmware ensure seamless operation with the new case battery.
